The resin (syrupy liquid) is released from the tree trunk when the bark is naturally damaged or cut by humans. Boswellia is called a 'gum resin' because it contains both water-soluble (gum) and alcohol-soluble (resin) components. Boswellia has traditionally been used for thousands of years as a powerful, natural remedy for the joints, respiratory tract and the gastrointestinal tract. Boswellia (as an extract) has also been popular and promising as a dietary supplement for decades. It is the boswellic acids that are considered to be the main active substances, of which acetyl-11-keto-ß-boswellic acid (AKBA) has been shown to be the most effective in research. Boswellia extracts are therefore usually standardized to a high level of AKBA (naturally, boswellia contains only 2-3% AKBA).
