Every person has two adrenal glands. The adrenal glands are not, as the name would suggest, organs that assist in the functioning of the kidneys. In fact, they have hardly anything to do with the functioning of the kidney.
Adrenal glands look like slightly flattened fleshy yellowish organs the size of the last phalanx of your thumb. The adrenal glands each weigh about 5 grams and lie on top of a fat layer on the kidneys. Each adrenal gland consists of two parts, the cortex or outside (cortex) and the nucleus or adrenal medulla (medulla). The bark comprises 90% by weight (just over 4 grams) and the pith about 10% (just under 1 gram).

Although small in size, the adrenal cortex makes a trio of very important hormones: cortisol, aldosterone, and androgens. These hormones are also called steroids. The adrenal medulla produces catecholamines. These are substances that play a role in signal transmission in the nervous system (or neurotransmitters), such as (nor)adrenaline and dopamine.
