Echinacea purpurea ('red coneflower') is a plant native to North America. This plant is also well known in Europe and is widely used to support the body's defenses and healthy airways. The part of the plant most commonly used in herbal preparations is the root. It contains a broad spectrum of active ingredients such as polysaccharides, alkylamides and chicory acid. Alkylamides are fat-soluble components of the root. Polysaccharides and chicory acid, on the other hand, are water-soluble components. The active components of plants are mostly located intracellularly. However, plant cells are surrounded by strong cell walls (made of cellulose) that are not digestible for humans. This makes it necessary to extract the active ingredients from the plant through extraction so that they become more available to the human body.
