Sodium thiosulfate Sodium thiosulfate or simply thio (Na2S2O3) is a colorless, room-temperature crystalline substance that usually acts as a pentahydrate Na2S2O3. 5(H2O) occurs. [edit] Applications Sodium thiosulfate was widely used as a fixer after developing photographic materials. The substance is also used in tanning leather, in water purification and because of its physical properties in hand warmers. Sodium thiosulfate is used to remove chlorine from solutions (sometimes called antichlor) Na2S2O3 + 4Cl2 +5H2O ? 2NaHSO4 + 8HCl Na2S2O3 + 2HCl ? 2NaCl + H2O + S + SO2 This process is used, among other things, after the bleaching of paper pulp. Sodium thiosulfate is used as an antidote to cyanides[3].
