Phenol is a compound with many applications in organic synthesis. It is therefore a raw material for many plastics: phenolic resins such as Bakelite and pharmaceuticals. Phenol is used in hospitals for the treatment of a pilonidal sinus (sinus pilonidalus).

Product description
Phenol or hydroxybenzene, formerly known as carbolic acid or carbolic acid, is an organic compound consisting of a benzene ring in which one hydrogen atom is substituted by a hydroxyl group (OH). Phenol is therefore an aromatic alcohol. In older texts, phenol is sometimes referred to as benzol, although this is a Germanism: Benzol is the German name for benzene. Phenol is the namesake of the phenols, a group of aromatic compounds that have one or more OH groups directly substituted on the benzene ring. Examples of such compounds are cresol and xylenol. At room temperature, phenol is a crystalline, volatile solid with a characteristic odor.
