Product description
Curcumin is one of the best known and most widely used herbal preparations. Curcumin is the main active ingredient of turmeric, an aromatic spice from the root of the Curcuma longa. Turmeric has its origins in Indian cuisine, where it is an important part of the famous curry dishes under the names tumeric or turmeric. Traditionally, curcumin has been used to support the immune system and to maintain healthy liver function and digestion. In addition, it contributes to the maintenance of flexible joints and supports the mental balance and the functioning of the central and peripheral nervous system. Curcumin-SLCP™: a technological breakthrough The biggest challenge in developing curcumin preparations with optimal efficacy is to overcome the problems of its absorption and bioavailability. Curcumin in an 'unprocessed' form is after all rapidly converted into inactive metabolites, such as curcumin-glucuronide, which are quickly excreted by the body after oral ingestion in the intestine and liver. Verdure Sciences, the producer of Vitals' Curcumin-SLCP™, has solved these problems after years of research and collaboration with the University of California (UCLA). Through their patented technology, they have been able to increase the absorbability of curcumin by 65x and the bioavailability by no less than 285x (compared to standard curcumin preparations consisting of 95% curcumin). This breakthrough was achieved after testing many different formulations for their bioavailability in humans. The most optimal results were obtained with a formulation that is in fact inspired by Indian cuisine, where turmeric is mixed with oily ingredients in the preparation of curry pastes. Their curcumin product, branded Longvida®, uses so-called Solid Lipid Curcumin Particles, where the curcumin is packaged in a fatty particle that consists of three long-chain fats that also occur in food, namely phosphatidylcholine, stearic acid and ascorbyl palmitate. How is Curcumin-SLCP™ absorbed into the body? Normally, curcumin is absorbed in the same way as most other nutrients (for example, sugars and amino acids). An initial enzymatic conversion of biologically active curcumin into curcumin-glucuronide, an inactive metabolite, is already taking place in the intestinal epithelium. The curcumin then goes through the portal vein blood to the liver where it is further inactivated and excreted again fairly quickly. However, Curcumin-SLCP™ uses an alternative route of absorption into the body. Because of the unique way in which it is surrounded by fats, it is recognized as such by the body and treated in the same way as other long-chain fats in the diet. These are taken up in the intestinal cells in chylomicrons (transport particles) and transported via the lymphatic system to the blood circulation. Initially, these chylomicrons do not pass through the liver but are transported via the blood to the various tissues and organs where they release their contents on the spot under the influence of a fat-splitting enzyme (lipoprotein lipase). The curcumin in the chylomicron is still in the biologically active form, which is also referred to as 'free' curcumin. In this form it is released from the chylomicron and is absorbed into the tissues and organs where it can exert an effect. Biologically active (free) curcumin itself is a fat-like substance and in this way can even cross the blood-brain barrier, unlike the inactive metabolites of curcumin, and support the functioning of the central nervous system. Absorbability vs. bioavailability People often talk about the absorbability of a certain substance. This refers to the maximum blood level (Cmax) reached at a specific time after oral intake of a nutrient. The absorbability is part of the bioavailability, but it certainly does not say everything. A nutrient can be absorbed very well and quickly reach a very high blood level, but then be broken down very quickly and removed from the body without having had enough time to be effective. It is important to also look at the development over time with regard to the blood level and not only at the moment when the maximum blood level is reached. What matters is how long the nutrient has been present in the blood in its biologically active form and how long it has had the chance to exert its effect. This says something about bioavailability, which is defined as that part of a nutrient that has been absorbed into the body and is available for use in certain bodily processes. Due to the high bioavailability, Curcumin-SLCP™ can suffice with a low effective dose. And because it is present in the body as an active curcumin for a long time, a single daily dose is sufficient. This has many advantages for usability. Not everyone can tolerate high doses of curcumin well, and it is also easier to only have to think about taking a supplement once a day.
