Product description
Thyroid formula Pro from Vitals contains a smart and well-founded selection of nutrients, with selenium as one of the main players. It is known that dietary intake of this trace element has come under pressure in recent decades. This while selenium does play an essential role in, among other things, the proper functioning of our thyroid gland. Of all the tissues in the human body, the thyroid has the highest selenium content and that is one of the reasons why it is necessary to continue to ensure an adequate supply of selenium. After all, our body cannot produce trace elements such as selenium itself. Other nutrients in Thyroid Formula Pro are myo-inositol, vitamin A, a generous dose of vitamin D3 from a vegetable source and two highly absorbable, amino acid-bound forms of iron and zinc. Supplemented with a particularly active extract from ashwagandha root with the brand name KSM-66®. Thyroid The thyroid gland is a small organ located in the front of the neck. Although the thyroid weighs only about 20 grams, it nevertheless has a far-reaching influence on the functioning of the body. The thyroid gland produces thyroid hormones that are important for metabolism, the absorption and combustion of nutrients and energy levels, among other things. The trace element iodine is known to be part of thyroid hormones. However, there is much less attention for the equally important role of selenium in the functioning of the thyroid gland. Selenium Selenium (also called selenium) is an essential trace element. In animal and vegetable products it occurs in both organic form (selenomethionine or selenocysteine) and inorganic form (selenite or selenate). The organic forms are one and a half to two times better absorbed by the body than the inorganic forms. A low selenium intake is common in Europe, including among vegetarians. The amount of selenium in vegetable sources such as bread and vegetables depends on the selenium content in the soil. Unfortunately, this is relatively low in European countries such as the Netherlands and Germany. Selenium is part of so-called deiodinases, enzymes directly involved in the production of thyroid hormones. But selenium also has an important antioxidant effect. Indeed, certain antioxidant enzymes (selenoproteins such as glutathione peroxidase [GPx]) are dependent on selenium. Free radicals are produced in the thyroid gland during the production of thyroid hormones. GPx captures these and thus helps to keep the thyroid tissue healthy. Finally, selenium also ensures the normal functioning of the immune system. Myo-Inositol Inositols are a group of nine related compounds found in plant and animal cells. The most common form is myo-inositol. Myo-inositol is a water-soluble vitamin-like substance in food (fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, lecithin, dairy, eggs, meat, fish, poultry) that is often counted among the B vitamins. In fact, myo-inositol is not a vitamin because the body (particularly in the liver and kidneys) can produce it itself from glucose. But in situations where there is an increased need, it can be useful to use a supplement with myo-inositol. Ashwagandha Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an herb from India, South Asia, Central Asia and parts of Africa that is rapidly gaining prominence in Western countries. Ashwagandha has been used in Ayurvedic health for over 4000 years in the form of tea, syrup, ointment, tincture or powder. What is special about ashwagandha is its strong adaptogenic (regulating, stabilizing and homeostasis-supporting) effect, which can have a beneficial effect on many body processes. In addition, it supports vitality and energy levels. KSM-66® is the brand name of the ashwagandha extract from producer Ixoreal that Vitals uses. Fourteen years of research preceded the development of this special extract. It is important with ashwagandha that the entire spectrum of active substances is extracted from the root, and not just the withanolides. After all, the effect of the preparation is based on the synergy between the various components. KSM-66® uses a specially developed extraction method (without toxic or environmentally harmful solvents). From this a broad spectrum extract is obtained in which the natural properties of the original plant have been preserved. Only the root is used because the undesirable withaferin A can occur in ashwagandha leaf. KSM-66® not only has the best quality, but is also the most researched and best substantiated ashwagandha extract in the world. Vitamin A Vitamin A (retinol) is converted in the body into the active form retinoic acid. In this form, it is involved in various biochemical and physiological processes in the cell. Vitamin A is important for a well-functioning immune system. Among other things, it helps to maintain a good balance between T helper cells 1 (Th1) and T helper cells 2 (Th2), an important condition for a balanced immune response. Vitamin A also contributes to a normal metabolism of iron and thus supports the effect of the iron in this product. Thyroid Formula Pro contains a safe dose of vitamin A and no beta-carotene (pro-vitamin A) so that the conversion of pro-vitamin A to vitamin A by the body is no longer necessary. Vitamin D3 (Vitamin D3V®) Vitamin D is a vitamin that is not found in large quantities in food, but is mainly produced in the skin under the influence of sunlight. Of course, this is dependent on sufficient sunshine, which is absolutely not a certainty in countries such as the Netherlands or Germany due to the changing of the seasons. In addition, people are staying indoors more these days. Vitamin D has an immunomodulatory effect. So it helps to ensure that the immune system continues to work normally, not too strong but not too weak either. Vitamin D receptors are found on various cells involved in the immune system, such as T cells. In this way, vitamin D provides broad support to the immune system. As a dietary supplement, the form of vitamin D3 is highly preferred over vitamin D2 in terms of effectiveness. Thyroid Formula Pro uses a newer form of plant-derived vitamin D3 from algae (Vitamin D3V®). Thyroid formula Pro offers a large dose of vitamin D as a supplement to the diet and its own production by sunlight. Zinc (TRAACS®) Zinc contributes to normal hormone balance. In addition, it has a positive effect on keeping the immune system normal and in balance. Zinc also helps protect cells against oxidative damage, partly because it plays a role in the functioning of the antioxidant enzymes catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD). Zinc interacts with vitamin A by contributing to normal metabolism of this vitamin. Thyroid Formula Pro contains zinc and iron in the form of a bisglycinate. Each mineral particle is strongly bound (chelated) to two (bis) molecules of the amino acid glycine. The general term for such a compound is amino acid chelate or amino acid chelated mineral. The word 'chelate' comes from Greek and means 'claw'. This compound form was chosen because its bioavailability is particularly good. And Vitals only uses real amino acid chelates from Albion Minerals, recognizable by the trademark TRACS®, which stands for The Real Amino Acid Chelate System. This ensures that it is actually a chelate and not just a mixture of a mineral with an amino acid, which some manufacturers falsely claim is also an amino acid chelate. Iron (Ferrochel®) Iron plays a role in important physiological processes including oxygen transport and energy metabolism. It is involved in the activity of certain enzymes in energy metabolism and helps to release energy from fats, carbohydrates and proteins. Iron can help with fatigue in these ways. Furthermore, it has a positive influence on the normal functioning of the immune system, possibly by being involved in the regulation of certain immune cells and substances. The iron bisglycinate in this product has the brand name Ferrochel® and also comes from Albion Minerals, the specialist in the field of amino acid-bound minerals. In addition to excellent bioavailability, another advantage of Ferrochel® is that it is gentler on the stomach and intestines compared to other iron compounds. Why not iodine and L-tyrosine? In Thyroid Formula Pro, it was deliberately chosen not to add iodine. Iodine is known to play an important role in the production of thyroid hormones because it is part of it. For this reason, you should definitely expect iodine in a thyroid formula. But specifically with iodine supplementation, the dosage is rather precise. This is quickly too low or too high. By using a separate iodine supplement for this, it is much easier to offer customization, based on the individual iodine status. Vitals has an organically certified iodine supplement from seaweed in its range, Vitals Iodine Organic. L-tyrosine is an amino acid that is a building block of thyroid hormones. However, the effect of supplementation with L-tyrosine in this context has not yet been sufficiently investigated. In addition, L-tyrosine supplementation usually requires high doses that would not fit in a capsule. Hence, L-tyrosine is also not part of Thyroid Formula Pro.
