Digestive Formula Pro is a nutritional supplement that consists of two scientifically based plant extracts with the brand names Prodigest® and Mucosave™. It contains ginger and artichoke, which are known to have a positive effect on digestion in general, and stomach function in particular. It is therefore ideal for people who could use some extra support in that area. In addition to ginger and artichoke, the product contains a special extract of prickly pear cactus and olive leaf. Digestion Digestion is the process by which food moves through the gastrointestinal tract and is broken down into smaller and smaller nutrients that can then be absorbed into the body through the intestinal wall. In the body, these nutrients, such as amino acids, fatty acids and simple sugars, are used as building material, reserve material and/or fuel. These nutrients ensure, among other things, that we can produce energy, build tissues, make hormones and neurotransmitters and form reserve substances. We also have to get most vitamins and all minerals through our diet, because we cannot make them ourselves. It follows that proper digestion plays a key role in maintaining optimal health. Prodigest® (ginger and artichoke extract) One of the ingredients in Digestive Formula Pro is the ginger and artichoke extract with the brand name Prodigest® from the Italian producer and herbal specialist Indena. Ginger is a spice extracted from the rhizome of the ginger plant (Zingiber officinale). It is part of the Zingiberaceae family, which also includes turmeric and cardamom. Indena ginger extract is standardized at 2.5% shogaols and gingerols. The artichoke extract in Prodigest® comes from the leaf of the artichoke (Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus). The active substances in this extract are flavonoids (1.4%), cynaropicrin (1.4%) and caffeoylquinic acid (5.6%). Human research shows that this particular ginger and artichoke combination extract is beneficial for digestion as it contributes to the maintenance of normal stomach function. It is preferably taken with a meal and can help with stomach fullness and bloating after eating. Artichoke also has a positive influence on liver function, partly by supporting bile production. The liver is involved in the digestion of fats through the production of bile. Bile ensures that fats from our diet are emulsified (divided into smaller spheres) so that fat-splitting enzymes can act on this properly. Mucosave™ (prickly pear cactus and olive leaf extract) The second ingredient in Digestive Formula Pro is a prickly pear cactus and olive leaf extract branded Mucosave™. It is produced by Bionap, also based in Italy. The prickly pear cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica) is mainly found in Mexico, but can also grow in other arid regions (such as the Mediterranean). The extract of the prickly pear cactus is known for being very rich in mucilage. Mucilages in plants consist of polysaccharides that can absorb a lot of water, so that they form a protective layer on the plant. Prickly pear cactus extract combines excellently with an extract from olive leaf (Olea europaea), which is rich in polyphenols.
