Q10 (ook wel co-enzym Q10) is een stof die het lichaam zelf aanmaakt, en voorkomt in alle cellen (in de mitochondriën). De vetoplosbare verbinding wordt ook wel ubiquinon genoemd, wat vrij vertaald zoiets betekent als ‘overal aanwezig’. Het lichaam wordt zowel door eigen productie als door inname via de voeding voorzien van Q10. Onder bepaalde omstandigheden kan de lichaamseigen synthese van Q10 onvoldoende zijn om de bestaande behoefte te dekken, en wordt de inname uit voeding belangrijker. Vandaar dat Q10 als een (semi-)essentiële voedingsstof wordt beschouwd. Q10 wordt na orale inname grotendeels omgezet in ubiquinol. Dit conversieproces is niet nodig bij gebruik van een supplement met kant-en-klare ubiquinol (zoals in de Vitals-producten Ubiquinol 50 en 100 mg; zie aldaar voor meer informatie).
