These symptoms may be caused by food poisoning or by an infection or inflammation of the colon. • If you have a bacterial inflammation of the large and/or small intestine, caused by invasive organisms (including Salmonella, Shigella and Campylobacter). • If you have severe intestinal inflammation (for example ulcerative colitis or pseudomembranous colitis due to the use of certain antibiotics). • In all cases where normal bowel movements should not be stopped.
